What is the differance between Toyota's vvt-i engine and Hondas Vtec engine?

VVT-i and VTEC is two totally different things. VVT-i is a system that varies cam timing throughout the entire rpm range. VTEC on the other hand, has nothing to do with timing, but rather a changing of cam lobes, reponsible for increasing air/fuel/exhaust flow.

If you want to compare what toyota has with VTEC, then its VVTL-i. And the only VVTL-i engine system that Toyota has is the 2ZZ-GE found in our Celica GT-S (also Matrix XRS, Rolla XRS, Vibe & Lotus Elise). The VVTL-i is a bit more complicated then the VTEC system and more similar to Honda's i-VTEC system.

NP Cool , here's a quick summary:

VVTi = cam phasing where the ECU retards/advances the timing for maximum power

VTEC = VVTL = Lift, where a second more aggressive cam is lifted into play resulting in more power top end

iVTEC and VVTLi = uses both cam phasing and cam lifting

Its all about technology, uses of mechanical & ECU.

VTEC - only can change LIFT on intake/exhaust valves.
VVTL-i - change timing/lift on intake valve but only lift on exhaust valve.
i-VTEC (on Civic SiR) exactly the same as VVTL-i.
i-VTEC (on RSX Type-S) - changes timing/lift on both intake & exhaust valve.

If the drivers are good, it would be the GT-S all the way. GS-R is bit of at technical ride itself, as not only does it have VTEC but also a dual-stage intake manifold. Its VTEC actually kicks in at 4400rpm and it uses a long-intake runner for low-end power, then at about 5800rpm switches to a short-intake runner for better highend power. Its got more usable torque (a flat torque curve almost), so if they are racing each other light-to-light, the GS-R would win. But if its an all-out 1/4 mile race or any race on the highway, the GT-S will win for sure, because of its superior highend power, given that both cars are stock.

Modded, well then that changes based on what they got done to it. The only thing you can knock the GS-R driver on, is that his car looks OLD. It came out way in early 1993 (japan), and hasn't changed much at all...! Whereas Celica still looks fresh and timeless in styling...like the Supra. Cool
